a look at the discovery woods

"For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and are in earth, visible and invisible." Colossians 1:16
The Discovery Woods and Gardens are a part of what sets Heritage apart from other schools. The purpose is to provide an outdoor classroom through the creative design and rebuilding of the historic garden on campus, while maintaining its woodland setting. It is an environment that allows hands on learning of the natural world as well as nurtures a child's inborn sense of wonder. The garden is a place that enhances the church's campus for all to enjoy.
Design & Development

  • Restoration of the early 1900's garden
  • Tree markers for identification of unique specimens
  • Arbor pathway restored
  • Intentional selection of native woodland plants that enhance the garden and provide opportunity for children to explore the characteristics of a variety of plants
  • Plant selection conducive to attracting animal life and providing seasonal color
  • Designated learning areas are accessed by thoughtfully placed pathways that protect the woodland setting

Why the outdoor classroom?

The Discovery Woods environment encourages children to:
  • Gain respect for living things by learning about animals and plants in their natural habitats
  • Ask questions, observe, and think about what their observations tell them
  • Share their observations with each other through large and small group discussion
  • Focus on the wonder of living things as they are - not as they appear in fantasy
  • Become young naturalists

"The Lord has done this and it is marvelous in our eyes." Psalm 118:23
